Supplements & conditions: what your horse actually needs.

Most horses need far less than the feed store aisle suggests, and the few things that genuinely help are cheap and boring. Start with the problem you’re trying to solve.

Read this first

This is general education from a horse trainer, not veterinary advice, and nothing here diagnoses or treats anything. No doses are given, because the right amount depends on your horse’s weight, workload, and everything else in the diet. Your vet and an independent equine nutritionist are the people who should sign off on a supplement plan. If your horse is showing any of the signs listed at the bottom of this page, stop reading and call the vet.

Before you buy anything

The four things that come first

Nothing in a bucket fixes a problem caused by one of these four. Work down the list in order. Most “supplement problems” disappear somewhere in the first three.

Forage, and knowing what’s in it

Hay or pasture is 80 to 100% of what your horse eats. It is also the single biggest variable nobody measures. Two loads of grass hay off two fields in the same valley can differ enormously in protein, sugar and minerals.

Get a hay analysis. It costs less than one month of most supplements, and it turns the entire rest of this page from guesswork into arithmetic. Your local extension office or feed dealer can tell you where to send a core sample.

Also: is he actually getting enough of it, and often enough? Long gaps with an empty stomach are the root of a startling number of problems.

Salt

Forage is naturally low in sodium, and a block in the corner is not a reliable way for a horse to get what it needs. Horses aren’t built to lick a hard block enough.

The general baseline for an idle adult horse is roughly an ounce of plain white salt a day, fed loose in the feed, and meaningfully more in heat or hard work. It is the cheapest, most consistently useful thing you can add to a feed pan.

Check the amount for your own horse with your vet or nutritionist. Workload, weather and the rest of the diet all move it.

Teeth, feet, parasites, pain

A horse that drops weight, won’t take contact, gets girthy, or suddenly can’t stand still may have a dental problem, a hoof problem, a worm burden, or something that hurts.

Dental exam, farrier schedule, a fecal egg count, and a saddle that fits. None of that is a supplement, and all of it outranks one.

A mineral base that matches the forage

Once you know what the hay provides, the usual answer is one well formulated ration balancer or vitamin and mineral supplement that fills the specific gaps, not six jars that each contain a bit of everything.

Stacking products is how horses end up over supplemented on some minerals and still short on others, and it’s how owners end up spending real money on overlap.

If the first four aren’t handled, the fifth thing won’t work.

Where you live matters

Two things worth knowing about hay in western Montana

Selenium: a regional low spot Well established

Much of the Pacific Northwest and the northern Rockies sits on low selenium soil, and forage grown on it carries that shortfall into the hay. Horses eating locally grown forage in these regions are a recognized deficiency risk.

But selenium is the one mineral where more is genuinely dangerous. It has a narrow margin between “enough” and “too much,” and it hides in ration balancers, fortified grain, hoof supplements and vitamin E products all at once. Excess is a real, documented toxicity: hair loss, hoof wall separation, lameness.

So: test, then supplement to the gap, from one product. Ask your vet about blood selenium before you add a second source, and add up every label already in the feed pan. Don’t guess this one from a map.

Vitamin E in a hay only winter Well established

Vitamin E is abundant in fresh green grass and degrades quickly once grass is cut and stored, and losses in stored hay are substantial within the first months. A horse on pasture in July is in a completely different position from the same horse on last year’s hay in February.

Horses on long hay only stretches with no green grass are a recognized vitamin E deficiency risk. That’s most horses in this valley for a good part of the year.

Worth an actual conversation with your vet, particularly for hard working horses, broodmares, growing youngstock, seniors, and any horse with muscle or neurological signs. Form matters, since natural and synthetic vitamin E are not equally absorbed, so this is a case where the cheap tub may not be the useful one.

Both of the above are general regional patterns, not a claim about your particular hay. Hay gets trucked in from everywhere. The analysis is still the answer.

Start with the problem

What are you actually trying to fix?

Pick the one that sounds most like your horse. Each answer follows the same order: what’s usually going on, what to change before buying anything, what has evidence behind it, and what is mostly marketing.

Feet & hooves

Cracking, chipping, crumbling at the nail holes, thin soles, flat feet, thrush, shoes that won’t stay on.

What’s usually going on

Hoof quality is mostly three things: genetics, environment and trim cycle, and only then nutrition. A hoof grows roughly a quarter to a third of an inch a month, so anything you change today shows up at the ground in the better part of a year. Wet dry cycling (mud, then dry) is brutal on horn quality, and a long trim cycle lets leverage tear a wall apart faster than any supplement can build it.

Change this first

  • Shorten the cycle. A tight, consistent trim schedule does more for a marginal foot than anything in a bucket.
  • Fix the footing. Dry standing area, clean bedding, and daily picking, especially for thrush, which is a management problem before it is a product problem.
  • Check the whole diet is adequate first. Hoof horn is protein and minerals; a horse short on the basics won’t build a good foot no matter what you add on top.

What has real support

  • Biotin Well established. The best evidenced single supplement ingredient in this entire guide. Controlled studies in horses with poor hoof quality show improved horn integrity, better white line condition, fewer defects and greater tensile strength. Two caveats that matter: the studies used a specific research dose over at least six to nine months, and biotin improves new growth only. Check that the product actually delivers a research level amount rather than a token sprinkle, and confirm the amount with your vet.
  • Adequate protein, zinc, copper and methionine Mixed / diet dependent. These are genuine building blocks for horn, but they only help if the horse is short on them. That is a hay analysis question, not a guess.

Mostly marketing

Topical hoof dressings that promise to “grow” hoof Thin evidence. Most seal the surface; some soften horn that was doing fine. They are not a substitute for a trim cycle. Also: any hoof supplement whose label leads with a proprietary blend and won’t tell you the biotin amount.

The training angle: a horse that won’t stand quietly for the farrier gets rushed trims, longer cycles and eventually gets dropped by farriers, which is a hoof quality problem caused by handling. That is fixable, and it’s one of the things Lazy K does.

Gut & ulcers

Girthy, cinchy, ear pinning when saddled, picky about grain, dull coat, weight that won’t stay on, cranky under saddle, loose manure.

What’s usually going on

A horse’s stomach secretes acid continuously whether or not there is anything in it. In a natural pattern the horse trickle feeds all day and forage plus saliva buffers that acid. Modern management, meaning big grain meals, long gaps with nothing to eat, stall confinement, hauling and hard work on an empty stomach, removes the buffer. That is the mechanism behind equine gastric ulcer syndrome, and it is common.

Ulcers are a veterinary diagnosis, not a guess. The only way to know is a gastroscopy, and it matters because there are two different diseases in there, squamous and glandular, that respond differently and need different treatment lengths. Omeprazole is the evidence based treatment of choice, and it is a prescription drug. No supplement is a substitute for it, and treating blind wastes months.

Change this first

  • Close the gaps. Forage in front of the horse as close to continuously as you can manage: slow feeders, nets, more frequent hay.
  • Feed before you ride, not after. A little forage before work puts something between the acid and the stomach lining.
  • Shrink the grain meals and split them up. Large starch meals are a known risk factor for both stomach and hindgut trouble.
  • Turnout and company. Both reduce the stress side of the equation, which is not a soft claim. It is in the risk factor literature.

What has real support

  • Omeprazole Well established. Prescription, vet directed, and the first line treatment. Note that glandular disease often needs a longer course than squamous.
  • Alfalfa as part of the forage Reasonable support. Its calcium and protein appear to buffer stomach acid. Cheap, easy, and it comes from the hay shed rather than a jar. (Watch the calories on an easy keeper.)
  • Live yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) and its fermentation products Mixed. The best studied gut supplement in horses. It appears to support fiber digestion and help stabilize the hindgut microbial population under stress, though trial results are inconsistent. This is hindgut support; it is not an ulcer treatment.

Mostly marketing

“Ulcer” supplements sold as an alternative to veterinary treatment Thin evidence. Some coating and buffering products may help alongside proper treatment or during the risky window after a course ends, but a nutraceutical that claims to heal ulcers on its own is making a claim the evidence doesn’t carry. Generic “probiotics” with no named strain and no live organism guarantee are close to worthless; equine probiotic evidence overall is weak and strain specific.

Stiffness & joints

Stiff for the first ten minutes, short behind, doesn’t want to pick up a lead, an older horse slowing down, a hard working horse you want to keep sound.

What’s usually going on

“Stiff” is a symptom with a long differential: arthritis, yes, but also foot pain, a sore back, poorly fitting tack, muscle soreness, poor conditioning, and simple crookedness from being ridden the same direction for years. Supplementing a joint for a problem that lives in the foot is a common and expensive mistake.

Change this first

  • Get a lameness exam before you get a supplement. What’s actually sore, and where.
  • Check the saddle. Bridging and pressure points cause exactly this picture. There’s a guide for it here.
  • Warm up properly and keep him moving. Turnout and consistent low intensity work do more for a stiff horse than any oral product, and that’s not a close call.
  • Manage weight. Every extra pound goes through the same joints.

What has real support

  • Veterinary options Well established. Joint injections, and prescription anti inflammatory medication used appropriately, have real evidence behind them. That’s a vet conversation.
  • Marine omega-3s (fish oil / EPA + DHA) and MSM Mixed. Among the better supported oral options for inflammatory support, though the horse specific trials are small.
  • Green-lipped mussel Mixed. Carries one of the few positive controlled equine trials in this whole category.

Mostly marketing

Oral glucosamine and chondroitin Thin evidence. The marquee ingredients on nearly every joint tub, and the equine evidence is weak. The core problem is absorption: only a small fraction of oral glucosamine gets into the horse, which can leave joint fluid levels far below what changes anything in a lab. Plenty of people feed it as low risk maintenance and that’s a defensible choice. Just buy it with realistic expectations. Oral hyaluronic acid Thin evidence has the same problem, more so: there is little evidence it survives the gut intact or reaches a joint.

If a joint product promises to rebuild cartilage or cure arthritis, that is a claim no oral equine supplement has earned.

Topline & muscle

Hollow behind the withers, ribs covered but no muscle over the loin, a dip in front of the hip, “he needs a topline builder.”

What’s usually going on

Topline is muscle, and muscle is built by correct work plus adequate protein. Specifically, adequate quality protein with the right amino acids, not just crude protein percentage. A horse can be fat and still have no topline. Adding calories to a horse with a muscling problem makes a fatter horse with no topline.

The other common cause is pain. A horse that hurts, whether that is the back, the hocks, the feet, ulcers or a badly fitting saddle, carries itself hollow, and a hollow horse cannot build a topline no matter what it eats.

Change this first

  • Rule out pain, starting with saddle fit and the feet.
  • Change the work, not the feed. Hills, backing, transitions, correct long and low stretching, poles. Muscle comes from asking the horse to use itself correctly.
  • Check protein quality, not just quantity, especially lysine and methionine. Mature grass hay is often short on both.

What has real support

  • Adequate quality protein / amino acids Well established. Lysine is the first limiting amino acid in most equine diets; if it’s short, nothing else matters. A good ration balancer is usually the cheapest fix.
  • Vitamin E Well established for horses on hay only diets. Genuine muscle relevance, and a regional issue here. See the section above.
  • Correct, progressive work Well established. The only thing on this page that reliably builds a topline.

Mostly marketing

Products branded as “topline builders” that are essentially a protein supplement at several times the price of a ration balancer Thin evidence. Read the guaranteed analysis and compare cost per gram of lysine.

Hot, spooky or anxious

Spooks at nothing, can’t stand still, tense in new places, checks out entirely, jumpy on windy days.

The Lazy K position, stated plainly

“It’s not actually the environment, it’s that they don’t know how to feel safe in their own bodies.” A large share of what gets called spookiness is either pain the horse is projecting outward, or a horse that has never been taught how to think instead of react. Neither of those is a nutrient deficiency, and no calming supplement will teach a horse a skill it was never shown.

That doesn’t mean diet is irrelevant. It means it’s third on the list, not first.

Change this first

  • Rule out pain. Ulcers, feet, back, saddle, teeth, eyes. A horse that hurts behaves like a horse that’s frightened, because it is.
  • Cut the starch, add the forage and the turnout. High grain, low forage, low movement management produces exactly this horse. Calories from forage and fat behave very differently from calories from grain.
  • Look at the workload. A fit horse with nothing to do is not an anxious horse; it’s a bored one.
  • Then teach the skill. A horse that has been given time to think, and rewarded for the smallest try, stops needing to flee the question.

What has real support

  • Alpha-casozepine Mixed: best of a weak field. A milk derived protein with preliminary equine behavioral evidence (reduced reactivity, improved learning in a study of semi feral ponies) and stronger evidence in other species. It is the one calming ingredient with a real experimental signal.
  • Magnesium Mixed: only if deficient. Genuine deficiency does cause excitability, and correcting it helps. Supplementing above requirement in a horse that isn’t short has not shown a reliable calming effect.

Mostly marketing

Tryptophan Thin evidence, and worth knowing in detail, because it’s in nearly every calming product on the shelf. Research suggests a mild short term effect at best, and that longer term feeding may leave horses looking more stressed rather than less. Most herbal calming blends Thin evidence. Largely untested in horses, and several contain substances prohibited in competition. If you show, check the rules before you feed anything in this category.

The easy keeper & metabolic horse

Cresty neck, fat pads over the tailhead and shoulders, holds weight on air, a history of laminitis, an older horse with a long curly coat that won’t shed out.

This one is genuinely serious

Insulin dysregulation is the single most important risk factor for endocrine laminitis, and laminitis is a career ending and sometimes life ending disease. Equine Metabolic Syndrome and PPID (Cushing’s) are veterinary diagnoses made on blood testing, and PPID has a specific, effective prescription treatment. If this section sounds like your horse, the next call is to the vet, not to a supplement company.

Watch especially for the earliest laminitis signs: shortened, pottery steps when turned in tight circles on hard ground, or when moving from soft footing onto hard.

Change this first. This is where the wins are

  • Control sugar and starch intake. That means testing hay for sugar, and choosing or soaking accordingly. Soaked hay produces the lowest insulin and glucose response of the common forage options; haylage produces the highest.
  • Restrict grazing deliberately: muzzle, dry lot, or timed turnout. Pasture sugar swings enormously with season, time of day, frost and drought.
  • Get the weight off, safely and slowly, and use a weight tape and a body condition score rather than an eyeball.
  • Exercise. The most effective non drug tool for improving insulin regulation in a horse that is sound enough to work.

What has real support

  • Diet and exercise management Well established. The ECEIM consensus position: EMS is controlled mainly by dietary strategy and exercise. This is the treatment, not the preamble to it.
  • Pergolide for diagnosed PPID Well established. Prescription, and it also helps the insulin picture in PPID horses.
  • A low calorie ration balancer Well established, because a horse on restricted forage still needs its vitamins and minerals. This is the one supplement almost every metabolic horse genuinely needs.

Mostly marketing

Herbal “metabolic support,” cinnamon, and chromium blends Thin evidence sold as an alternative to controlling sugar intake. Some may have a marginal effect; none replace the diet work, and time spent on them is time a laminitis risk horse doesn’t have. Discuss anything in this category with your vet, who may have prescription options with actual data.

The hard keeper

Ribby through the winter, drops weight in work, won’t clean up a feed pan, “he just runs hot.”

What’s usually going on

Before “he’s just a hard keeper” there is a checklist, and most horses come off it: teeth, parasites, ulcers, pain, and simply not enough forage. A genuinely hard keeping horse with clean teeth, a clean fecal egg count and free choice good hay is uncommon.

Change this first

  • Dental exam. The single most common reversible cause, and easy to miss.
  • Fecal egg count and a targeted deworming plan, not a rotational calendar from 1998.
  • Weigh what he’s actually eating. “Two flakes” is not a measurement; flakes vary by a factor of three. Most thin horses are simply getting less hay than anyone thinks.
  • Consider ulcers, especially if he’s picky, girthy or in hard work.
  • Warmth and shelter. A cold horse burns calories to stay warm; a windbreak and a blanket can be worth several pounds of feed in a Montana January.

What has real support

  • More and better forage first Well established, including soaked beet pulp or chopped forage products for horses with poor teeth.
  • Added fat: oil, stabilized rice bran, high fat feeds Well established. Calorie dense, safe for the hindgut, and doesn’t produce the fizzy behavior that comes with piling on grain.
  • Splitting concentrates into small, frequent meals Well established. Large starch meals overwhelm small intestinal digestion and push starch into the hindgut, which is how you get loose manure, hindgut upset and colic risk.

Mostly marketing

“Weight gain” supplements sold by the scoop Thin evidence. Weight comes from calories; a small daily scoop rarely contains meaningful calories. Compare the price per megacalorie against a bag of rice bran or a jug of oil.

Coat & skin

Dull, staring coat, dandruff, itching, rain rot, scratches, slow to shed out, sun bleached.

What’s usually going on

Coat is a readout of the whole animal. A dull coat usually means one of: inadequate overall nutrition, a parasite burden, an underlying disease, or a skin condition that is bacterial, fungal or allergic and needs treating as such. It is rarely a fatty acid deficiency on its own.

Slow shedding in an older horse is a specific and important sign. See the metabolic section, because that can be PPID.

Change this first

  • Get the base diet right. Protein, minerals, calories.
  • Fecal egg count.
  • Treat the actual skin condition. Rain rot and scratches are infections and respond to appropriate topical treatment plus keeping the horse dry, not to a coat supplement.
  • Groom. Unglamorous, free, effective, and it’s also how you find the lump, the heat, or the sore back before it becomes a problem.

What has real support

  • Omega-3 fatty acids: flaxseed, ground flax, or marine sources Reasonable support. A real effect on coat quality and skin, and a sensible addition for horses off pasture, since fresh grass is naturally naturally rich in omega-3 and hay is not. Note that plain vegetable oils are largely omega-6.
  • Adequate zinc and copper Diet dependent. Genuinely involved in coat and skin quality, and commonly short in forage only diets. Which brings you back to the hay analysis.

Mostly marketing

“Shine” supplements that are mostly oil at a large markup Thin evidence, and biotin sold specifically for coat. The biotin evidence is about hoof horn, not hair.

The senior horse

Over about twenty, losing condition, stiff, coat not shedding right, quidding hay, slowing down.

What’s usually going on

“Old” is not a diagnosis. Most decline in senior horses traces to three specific things, all of which are manageable: teeth that can no longer grind long stem forage, PPID, and arthritis. Each has a real intervention, and each gets missed by being written off as age.

Change this first

  • A thorough dental exam, and if he’s quidding, switch to forage he can actually process: soaked hay pellets or cubes, chopped forage, soaked beet pulp.
  • Test for PPID if the coat is long, curly, slow to shed, or he’s losing topline while holding fat pads.
  • Keep him moving. Gentle consistent movement is the best arthritis management there is.
  • Watch his place in the herd. A polite old horse can be quietly getting run off the hay by a younger one.

What has real support

  • Forage he can chew Well established. The highest value change available for most senior horses, and it isn’t a supplement.
  • Complete senior feeds Well established when fed at the labeled rate as a forage replacement, rather than sprinkled on top.
  • Pergolide for diagnosed PPID Well established.
  • Vitamin E Well established for hay only seniors. See the regional section above.

Mostly marketing

Broad “senior support” blends layered on top of a complete senior feed Thin evidence, usually duplication you’re paying for twice.

Working & sweating

Long trail days, ranch work, hauling to events, hot weather, a horse that sweats heavily or seems flat after work.

What’s usually going on

Horse sweat is unusually concentrated in electrolytes. A working horse in heat can lose several gallons an hour, carrying substantial sodium, chloride and potassium with it. Losses on that scale genuinely affect performance, recovery, thirst response and muscle function.

The common mistake is reaching for a fancy electrolyte product while the horse still isn’t getting basic daily salt.

Change this first

  • Daily loose salt, every day, all year. This is the foundation and it is not optional for a working horse.
  • Water, and lots of access to it. Electrolytes without water make things worse, not better. Watch intake after hard days and when hauling.
  • Condition the horse for the work you’re asking.

What has real support

  • Plain salt (sodium chloride) Well established. Forage is naturally low in sodium and most diets fall short without it.
  • A proper electrolyte supplement after heavy sweating Well established. Used on an as needed basis around hard work, in addition to daily salt rather than instead of it. Read the label: many are mostly sugar, and a good one leads with sodium, chloride and potassium.
  • Added fat for calorie density Well established in horses doing sustained work.

Mostly marketing

Electrolyte pastes given “just in case” to a horse that hasn’t sweated, and any electrolyte whose first ingredient is dextrose Thin evidence. Also: giving electrolytes to a horse that won’t drink is a way to make dehydration worse.

Dark or coffee colored urine after work, a horse that goes stiff, sweaty and reluctant to move during or after exercise: stop, don’t walk him out, and call the vet. That can be tying up, and it is an emergency.

Evidence tiers describe the strength of the equine research, not whether a product is a scam. Plenty of thin evidence ingredients are harmless; they just shouldn’t be what you’re counting on.

Practical

How to read a supplement label

Six questions that sort most products in ninety seconds

  • Does it name the amount of each active ingredient? If it says “proprietary blend,” you cannot tell whether the useful ingredient is at a research level or a pinch. That alone is a reason to pass.
  • How much of the working ingredient per daily serving? Not per pound of product. Per scoop, as fed.
  • What’s already in the feed pan? Add up every label. Overlap is the most common and most expensive mistake, and with selenium it’s a safety issue.
  • Cost per day, not per tub. The tub that looks expensive is often cheaper per day.
  • What’s the honest time frame? Hoof: six to nine months minimum. Coat: a couple of months. Anything promising a change in days is selling the wrong story.
  • If you compete, is every ingredient legal? Check your association’s prohibited list, especially with herbal products.

And a fair warning about the category

Equine supplements are not regulated the way medicines are. Labels are not independently verified as a rule, claims are loosely policed, and third party quality testing is voluntary.

That doesn’t make the category worthless. It means the burden of proof sits with you. Prefer companies that publish full amounts, submit to independent quality programs, and make modest claims.

A reasonable rule: one ration balancer matched to your hay, salt, and at most one targeted product for one specific problem, reviewed with your vet once a year. If the feed room has six tubs in it, something has gone wrong.

Stop and call the vet

No supplement belongs anywhere near any of these. Some are emergencies measured in hours.

  • Colic signs. Pawing, flank watching, rolling, stretching out, not passing manure, off feed, sweating without work.
  • Laminitis signs. Reluctance to walk, rocking back onto the heels, heat in the hooves, a bounding digital pulse, shortened pottery steps on hard ground or tight circles.
  • Choke. Coughing, retching, feed or saliva coming from the nostrils after eating.
  • Lameness where the horse will not put weight on the leg, or any sudden severe lameness.
  • Any eye problem. Squinting, tearing, cloudiness, swelling. Eyes go bad fast.
  • Fever, or a horse that is dull and off feed.
  • Neurological signs. Stumbling, weakness, incoordination, dragging a toe, circling, head tilt.
  • Dark urine, stiffness or reluctance to move during or after exercise. Possible tying up. Don’t walk the horse out; call.
  • A wound over or near a joint, however small.
  • Sudden, unexplained change in behavior or performance. That is a pain question until proven otherwise, which is where this whole page started.
