What to set it to

| Shod horse in work | 4 to 6 weeks |
| Barefoot horse in regular work | 4 to 6 weeks |
| Barefoot, light use or turned out | 6 to 8 weeks |
| Very light use, ideal footing | Up to 10 to 12 weeks, as an outer limit |
| Foals and youngstock | Shorter, and started early |
| Rehabbing a distorted foot | Shorter, on your farrier's schedule |
Feet grow more slowly in cold weather, which is exactly why people let the cycle stretch over winter and how horses quietly get behind. Slower growth is still growth, and the mechanics of a long foot do not care what month it is. The full hoof guide is here.
