What a Lazy K account holds, and who can see it.
This covers the website and member accounts. The Horse Services Directory has its own, narrower disclosure, and it still applies: read the directory privacy page.
This is a draft pending legal review. It describes what the software actually does today, in plain language. It is not legal advice and it has not been reviewed by a lawyer. Sections needing that review are marked below.
You do not need an account
Every guide, every calculator and the whole trail search work signed out. An account adds saving and reading rider reports. Nothing on this site requires you to create one.
Account identity and signing in
Accounts are handled by Firebase Authentication, a Google service. You can sign in with an email address and a password, or with Google. Lazy K never sees or stores your password; Firebase handles that. If you sign in with Google, Google tells us your account identifier, your email address and, if you have one, your display name.
What is stored in the Lazy K database about you as a person is deliberately small: a display name if you enter one, your email address, your unit preference, which horse is your default, and two display settings. The rules require the stored email to match the address you actually signed in with, so nobody can store somebody else's.
Horse profiles
If you add a horse, we store what you type: a name, coat, and the notes and details you choose to enter. Horse records are private to your account. Another member cannot read them, and the security rules refuse any attempt.
Tool records — two different things
This is the part people most often misunderstand, so it is worth being exact.
- Browser history stays on your device. Several calculators can keep a short history in your own browser's storage. That never leaves the device, is not visible to Lazy K, and disappears if you clear your browser data. Signing in does not upload it.
- Saved records go to your account. Seven tools — bodyweight, vitals, care calendar, trip checklist, annual cost, hay price comparison and pasture planning — can save a result to your account when you are signed in and press save. Those are stored in the Lazy K database under your own account and can be reopened from your dashboard.
The remaining tools have no history at all. A full, current inventory is kept in the project's
SAVED-TOOLS.md and is updated when a tool changes.
We will not move your browser history into your account without asking you first. If that ever becomes possible, it will require a deliberate press, it will copy rather than move, and declining will be remembered.
Horse care and vitals information
Vitals, care calendars and similar records are information about an animal that you chose to type in. Treat them as your own notes. They are stored the same way as any other saved record, private to your account, and are not reviewed, analysed or used for anything by Lazy K.
Not veterinary advice. Everything on this site, including every calculator and guide, is educational. It does not replace a veterinarian, a farrier or a trainer who can see your horse. If a horse is unwell, call your vet.
Trail reports
Reports about parking, footing and conditions are written to be read by other members, so a report you submit is not private. The report format deliberately has no field for an email address, a name, a phone number or payment information, and the security rules refuse a report that carries one. The only identifier attached is the opaque account ID the rules need to prove the report is yours.
Reports are reviewed before other members see them. Submitting requires a Trail Contributor entitlement, which is not on sale. Reading approved reports needs only a free account.
Location
The site asks for your device location in one place only: the Use my location button in the Horse Services Directory. Nothing happens until you press it, the coordinates go to Google to centre a map, and Lazy K never receives them. The directory privacy page explains that in full.
The Today at the Barn weather tool remembers a place you have looked up, in your own browser, so it can show the same forecast next time. That stays on your device.
Sharing with Kat and Trevin
Sharing is off unless you turn it on. By default, nobody at Lazy K can read your horse records. If you choose to share, you pick which categories and which horses, and the security rules enforce that choice record by record — an owner administrator who has been given access to one horse's care notes cannot read a different horse, or a category you did not select. Turning sharing off removes that access immediately.
Who else is involved
- Google Firebase hosts the site, handles sign-in, and stores account data. Google processes this under its own terms.
- Google Maps serves the directory search, and receives what that search contains.
- Public map and weather sources — the Forest Service, the Park Service, the BLM, OpenStreetMap, the National Weather Service and open forecast APIs — are contacted by your browser when you use the trail or weather pages. Those requests come from your browser and carry the usual information any web request carries.
- No analytics and no advertising. The site runs no tracker, no analytics product and no advertising network. There is nothing following you between pages.
Getting your data out, and deleting it
Be aware of the current limits. We would rather say this plainly than imply something the software does not do.
- You can delete individual horses and individual saved records yourself, at any time.
- There is no self-service whole-account deletion yet. Email Kat and we will delete your account data by hand.
- There is no automated data export yet. Ask and we will get you a copy.
- We do not have a published retention schedule. Records stay until you or we delete them.
- Deleted records are removed from the live database. We cannot promise anything about backups Google keeps as part of running the service.

What we do not claim
- This site is not a medical or veterinary record system, and no health-privacy law such as HIPAA applies to it. Do not treat it as a clinical record.
- We do not claim compliance with any particular privacy regime. Data travels over HTTPS and is stored by Google, but we make no encryption guarantee of our own.
- We do not sell, rent or trade anything about you. There is nobody to sell it to.

Payments
No payment system is active. There is no checkout on this site, no subscription, and no card details anywhere. A future Trail Contributor membership is planned through Square, and when it exists this page will say exactly what Square receives. Until then, nothing on this site can charge you.
Children
This site is meant for adults managing horses. It is not directed at children and we do not knowingly create accounts for them.
